My name is Derek Devore, and I am currently a senior at the
University of Houston-Downtown. I will
graduate from the College of Public Service in December 2015, with a Bachelors
of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies, 4-8 Generalist.
Throughout my time in the Department of Urban Education, I have had the opportunity to observe and teach with some amazing mentor teachers. I currently serve as a Teacher Assistant at Crockett Elementary in the Houston Independent School District and was given the opportunity to learn from the teachers here. Crockett Elementary is a Title 1 elementary school located in the heart of the Arts District of Houston. Crockett’s student body population is a great representation of the diversity of the community it serves. Through these last two semesters I have had the privilege to work hand and hand with the 5th grade team of Crockett Elementary. With the guidance of the 5th grade team I was given multiple opportunities to work with the students through small groups, moderating discussions, lesson planning, and teaching. Most of my time was spent in the science classroom helping with experiments and lessons involving an array of subjects. Through my position at the school I have had the opportunity to teach many other classes as a substitute and was able to successfully take 5th grade lessons and break them down to make the starting blocks of information for the younger students. Through all of my time working at Crockett I have learned many lessons but none more important than to be flexible and to always remember we’re here for so much more than just instructing.
